The class assignment was to choose an old fable/fairy tale and design a contemporary book cover for it. I chose a Brothers Grimm tale about a child that is handed over to death as a godson when his father can't afford to raise the baby himself. After deciding on what I wanted for the visual, I posted an ad on craigslist for an infant model. As for the skeleton hands, I borrowed an anatomy skeleton from one of the figure drawing studios on my campus. I photographed the baby and the skeleton separately and then photoshopped the two images together. That way I didn't frighten the child or the mother. Also, it was more efficient to photograph them separately. The baby and his mother were only in the studio for a total of 20 minutes.
